About the event

Because Black History Month is EVERY month! Join Wee The People for an activity-filled celebration of freedom fighter, political organizer, and giant of Boston's Black history, Harriet Hayden.

In the mid-1800s, Harriet and Lewis Hayden turned their Beacon Hill home into a refuge and major headquarters of the anti-slavery movement. Two portrait photo albums gifted to Harriet during this time -- now on view at the Boston Athenæum -- offer a rare glimpse into a vast network of Boston's Black activists and organizers, at a time when Black Americans began to use photography to reclaim their stories, identities, and lives.

Portraits in Color will feature an interactive read-aloud of the award-winning picture book "Take A Picture of Me, Mr. Van Der Zee!" followed by an art-making activity creating Black-affirming picture frames for our own portraits. Come through and keep Black History Month going 24/7/365!

Recommended for ages 6 and older.
